10/18/10:

Math Grading Change Notice
In looking at the work habits grades this year in Math so far I have been very disappointed. So I started trying to think of ways to help my students improve their grades. Starting last week I am changing the way I am entering work habits grades into the grade book. This will only apply from this point forward. I am making each homework assignment worth 10 points. Each student will receive the 10 points if they turn their assignment in on time and completed. If they have only completed 90% of the assignment =9 points, 80% =8points, 70% =7points. If less than 70% of the assignment has been completed it will be handed back as incomplete and a 0 will be given until the time that it is finished and turned in. These papers, along with any late papers will receive a 6.

I still want the students to work to correct their papers until they receive a 100%. I feel that there is much to learn from our mistakes and it makes better students when we take the time to analyze where we went wrong and how we can fix it. So for those people who make all their corrections on a paper they will receive 1 point per paper in the Corrections column in the grade book. If they need to correct a second time, they can receive a 2nd point. But they need o see me about their corrections so we can discuss the mistakes they are making.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to email.

In Math this week:
We are starting off the week working more with the fraction blocks that we made in class last Thursday. The kids are working to make connections between the fractions. Hopefully we will come away with an understanding of he relationship between 1/2's, 1/4's, and 1/8's as well as 1/3's, 1/6's, and 1/9's. Thursday I plan a worksheet covering equivalent fractions. This worksheet will most likely be homework so please watch for it. I plan to be heading back into the book with Lesson 4-5 next Monday.

In Science this week:
We are working on putting our plate boundaries into picture form. Each student needs to illustrate 4 different types of boundaries: Convergent 1- mountains, Convergent 2- subduction, Divergent, and Transform. They have options about how they can choose to illustrate these movements. Our Sciencesarus has pictures that are cut-aways illustrating the inner layers and what is happening they can use for inspiration. They may also choose to be more creative in their interpretation. (Example: for convergent 1 you might have a picture of football players that have collided and then piled up instead of plates colliding and mountains forming.) I suggested this time line to the students today: Monday- complete rough draft to be ready for class on Tuesday. Tuesday- get rough draft approved and begin final draft. Wednesday- complete final draft, make sure everything is neatly drawn, labeled if appropriate, and colored neatly in colored pencil. Use marker or black pen to outline only. This will be due at the beginning of the period Thursday.

Thursday I am planning a missing work day or game day for those who have all assignments turned in in all classes.

10/05/10:

In Math this week:
We are working on prime factorization and factors Monday and Tuesday. Monday was a worksheet and Tuesday was Lesson 4.3 out of the book. Wednesday we will be working on Accelerated Math, corrections, and missing work. Remember:  your child can redo any homework that was turned in on time until they receive a 100% on it!!!!! Late work may be redone up to a 65%.

There will be a quiz on Thursday over Lessons 4.1 - 4.3. Those Divisibility rules will rear their ugly heads again. So please continue to review them with your child.

Friday we will be introducing Greatest Common Factor (GCF) with a worksheet.

In Science this week:
We are introducing the Theory of Continental Drift and the Theory of Plate Tectonics. On Monday we watched a Bill Nye DVD on the Earth's Crust. Tuesday and Wednesday we are looking at the puzzle of earth and how scientists may have come up with their theories about how the plates move. Thursday and Friday we will be getting into the specifics of the theories and the people behind them.

09/27/10:

In Math this week:
We took our divisibility rules quiz today and it was very obvious that we need to spend more time working with the rules. Your child should be bringing home their quiz tomorrow with corrections made and stapled to it. You can find the rules they need to understand written in their Math Notebooks. See your email for more specifics on retaking the test.

Accelerated Math got up and running last week and we are starting to work through the objectives. The great thing about this program is that the students can move as fast as they want through the objectives. I have set a goal of 40 objectives each for this trimester to be reached by November 17th. Any night we do not have a homework assignment out of the book or a worksheet the students should be working on their AM assignment. I will put a No Count score in the grade book for the time being that will give you an idea of your child's progress. This assignment will change to a graded assignment at the end of the trimester worth 100 points.

I want to be moving past the divisibility rules by Thursday of this week. It is important that they understand them though as it will make finding factors of numbers and using prime factorization easier. On Thursday we will be completing Lesson 4.2 on exponents. Friday we will begin Lesson 4.3 on Prime Factorization. There will be homework both Thursday and Friday for those lessons.

In Science this week:
I have a sub tomorrow in order to attend a training for the District. The students will be viewing a Planet Earth segment on Mountain Building.

On Wednesday for the classes that have completed their Layers of the Earth notes will be conducting a lab to explain the differences between the Asthenosphere and the Mesosphere. We will also be reviewing for a quiz over the Layers of the Earth. The class that has not finished their notes will be completing them and then reviewing.

On Thursday we will be taking the Layers of the Earth quiz. They will need to be able to correctly identify each layer and list what it is made of. Please be studying and reviewing with your child.

On Friday we will begin looking at Plate Tectonics and the theories behind them.

09/22/10:

Math Update: We will still be working on Divisibility Rules from Lesson 4.1 the remainder of the week. The homework assignment showed that we need more practice working with the rules. Look for a quiz over Divisibility Rules early next week. You should see worksheets for homework the remainder of this week.

09/20/10:

In Math this week:
We took our first quiz today over Lessons 1.1 - 1.4. I have a few students who forgot to come in at lunch to finish. They will receive 1 more opportunity to do this tomorrow, after that they will be graded on what they have completed.

We will be skipping ahead to chapter 4. We will be working on more number theory before beginning fractions. Expect to see divisibility rules, exponents, and prime factorization this week. I am in hopes that we can make good connections from our initial lessons to the number theory we see in chapter 4.

I expect to complete Lesson 4.1 on Tuesday, introduce Accelerated Math on Wednesday, Lesson 4.2 on Thursday, and 4.3 on Friday.

In Science this week:
We are continuing our introduction to our unit on Formation of Earth. We will be studying the Earth's layers in more depth. We have worksheets, notes, and activities to help learn the properties of each layer and the theories behind our understanding of the different layers.

Expect a quiz over the Layers and their characteristics next Thursday, September 30th.

09/14/10:

UPDATE: Personal Time Lines Due Friday, not Thursday!

09/13/10:

In Math this week:
We are learning how to enter answers in our new eInstruction clickers. This will hopefully ease the process of grading our papers. Due to this there is no homework on Monday night.

On Tuesday we will have our first corrections/missing work day. For every Math homework assignment the students can redo the problems that they missed. Guidelines for corrections:

1. Corrections need to be completed on a separate sheet of paper.
2. All work must be shown for the correction to be graded.
3. The corrections must be stapled to the front of the original assignment.
4. CORRECTED must be written at the top of the paper.

Students are welcome to correct their homework papers until they have achieved a 100% on the assignment. This helps them to see the mistakes they are making and hopefully learn from them prior to the test. These corrections will be reflected in their work habits grade. Content knowledge grades will come from various quizzes and tests. Most corrections will need to be completed on the student's own time.

Missing work slips will also be handed out on Tuesday. Please check with your child to see if they received one. I know the District is hoping to have the Parent Access part of the new Skyward system going sometime this week. When that is up and running you can check their progress daily online.

The remainder of the week we will continue to work in chapter 1. Plan to see homework assignments
for Lessons 1.3 and 1.4 as the week progresses. We will have a quiz over the first four lessons either Friday or Monday of next week.

In Science this week:

We are finishing up our map skills by creating a personal time line using what we have learned about scale. Right now I am planning for this to be due on Thursday. Requirements:

1. Time line must be laid out to include all the years of the student's life. (Equal spacing for each year.)
2. 5 major events must be recorded appropriately on the timeline. (Events should not all take place on January 1st.)
3. The 5 events must not all be the same event. (i.e. 5 different birthdays)
4. On one side of the timeline the event must be described and neatly printed.
5. On the other side of the timeline the events must be illustrated in colored pencil. Neatness counts in all drawing and coloring. You don't have to be the best artist, just give your best effort!
6. Final copy quality. (i.e. no pencil, neatly outlined in black pen, etc.)

By the end of the week we hope to be introducing our first unit on Formations of the Earth.
