Week of January 10-14

In all of Mr. L's classes, students were given slips of Missing Work. All missing/incomplete work needs to be turned in by Thursday at 8am in order to receive credit. Our mid-trimester progress reports will be compiled January 13th & 14th.

Parent Teacher Conferences:


Our mid 2nd trimester parent teacher conferences will be held Wednesday the 19th & Thursday the 20th from 4-7pm. All parents are invited and encouraged to attend. Simply first come first serve, so be prepared to wait in line for your child's teachers.

October 18th

Social Studies:1. Students have until this Thursday Oct 21st to re-take their South America Political and/or Physical Map Quiz that was returned last week. Anyone who received an D or F was encouraged to do so, but so far very few students have taken this opportunity.
2. Their are several different ways to take notes. We will concentrate on 2 styles this week, a linear/linguistic style for "Origins of the Incas" (link) and a web/visual style for "The Empire" (Sequencing Gr. Org link: Use Choose A Topic example) Information is taken from the white Inca Book, which unfortunately we only have a class set. Most students will NOT require additional time outside of class, but those students who need additional time need to come in before school, at lunch or after school since the books may NOT leave the classroom.

Reading: 1. Finished discussion on Idioms. All students were given 2 idioms, in which they were required to write the idiom, draw a literal interpretation, and then below the drawing write a sentence or two explaining the inferred/real meaning. For example "you drive me up the wall", a student could draw a car going up a wall, while underneath the picture, the explanation would state that behaviors of another individual cause them great anguish.
2. Completing Scavenger Hunt on the Incas (Link) using Kids Discover Magazines (class set). We are focusing on how to use expository text to gain information. Title, subtitles (headings), Table of Contents, Glossary, Index, and Illustrations with captions were/and are all topics of conversation.
3. Handed back Quiz on words from Lesson Vocab Packet. Anyone scoring 31 or less are encouraged to re-take. Wrong answers must be corrected in pen, students need to study definitions and how to apply words in context (fill in the blank) with a parent, and parent must sign original quiz that has been corrected, indicating child has studied with them.

Social Studies:
We are wrapping up our geography introduction unit this week. There will be a test on Wednesday, September 15th over the unit. Please be studying with your child the continents, oceans, hemispheres, map symblos and using latitude and longitude.

We hope that by the end of the week we will be introducing our unit on the Inca people and South American political and physical geography.

Reading:
We are introducing inferences this week for our first reading strategy. We will be working on infering information from various types of reading and context. We will also be correcting our first Vocabulary Packet and taking a quiz on the words and definitions. (See the link below from last week's post to help your child study.) The quiz is scheduled for Friday.

On Thursday we will be visiting the library for the first time as a class. The students will be introduced to the different sections in the Library and how to look up books using the Library's Destiny program. After our Library visit we require each student to begin reading each night at home for 30 minutes.

Social Studies:
This week we have been working on hemispheres and latitude and longitude. We have completed several worksheets and practiced on the board as a class. We will continue to wrap up latitude and longitude early next week.

Wednesday, Sept. 15 we are planning on having a test over the continents, oceans, and map skills. You can help your child study by going over the 7 continents, the oceans and how to spell them all. Also you can have your child practice using latitude and longitude to locate places on a map.

Reading:
We have been working on Vocabulary Packet Week 1. Students will need to know the words and definitions by next Thursday, Sept. 16th. Check out the link for words and definitions!
